50 Cent Fights Hunger With Energy Drink

"I want to feed a billion kids. It's your boy, 50 Cent." That's the call to action to buy a new energy drink in one of several promo videos from the gangsta rapper. Mismatched as that might sound, the plan appears to be in earnest; Fiddy wants to be the new Sally Struthers.
His new energy shot drink, Street King, hit store shelves this week. The company will donate a portion of the revenue from each bottle sold to the United Nation's World Food Programme, enough to feed one child.
"This is our world, our streets. I need your energy," 50 Cent says in another video. But he also needs your money—while the donations will make some difference, this is a classic case of using feel-good marketing to sell an otherwise undistinguished product.
50 Cent hasn't specified how much money will go to World Food Programme, which should raise questions about how serious he is about charity. Tony Sellars of Feed the Children says he's waiting for more details. "Unless there's a plan behind it and a structure, people are going to be skeptical," he says

Of course, any attention the rapper can bring to the issue of world hunger is beneficial. Somalia faces its worst famine in 60 years and the world community is doing far less to help than it has in previous crises. "Anything that brings a spotlight onto the problem is good news," Sellars says. His organization has been around for more than three decades, delivering 133 million pounds of food last year to everywhere from the slums of Kenya to forgotten corners of America.
Sellars says Street King and its robust marketing campaign will reach a younger demographic than most hunger outreach, and that's good for his sector. "It's everybody's goal now to reach that next generation of givers," he says.
On the company's slick new website, Fiddy explains that he became interested in hunger issues after encountering poverty as a spectator at the World Cup in South Africa. Once back in the U.S., Fiddy and his manager concocted the idea for the new energy beverage. "I grew up without money, but I didn't grow up hungry," says the rapper, who was infamously shot nine times in a robbery that helped create his image as a street-hardened lyricist. "A lot of people out there are actually hungry right now, actually dying of hunger. I feel like it's our responsibility to come together and do things to create a solution for this actual problem."

Ezekiel 34:3
Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are
fed: but ye feed not the flock.

Ezekiel 34:8
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds
fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

Ezequiel 34:8- Vivo yo, ha dicho Jehová el Señor, que por cuanto mi rebaño fue para ser robado, y mis ovejas fueron para ser presa de todas las fieras del campo, sin pastor; ni mis pastores buscaron mis ovejas, sino que los pastores se apacentaron a sí mismos, y no apacentaron mis ovejas;

Fla. church gunman taken into custody

LAKELAND, Fla. — Derrick Foster was kneeling in prayer when the gunman burst through the front door of Greater Faith Christian CenterChurch. He heard shooting, then screams.
A former parishioner is accused of critically wounding the church’s pastor aand associate pastor as close to 20 people prayed between Sunday services. Authorities and relatives said Jeremiah Fogle shot his wife to death at his house, where he had started his own church, before continuing the rampage a block away at Greater Faith.
Foster, a teacher in the ministry, got up and saw the man near the pulpit, turning around with the gun in his hand.
“The first thing in my mind was, ‘I have to take this gun away,’ ” he said.
Foster said he and another man tackled the gunman. The Polk County sheriff's office said one of the parishioners struck the suspect in the head with a microphone stand.
“He had a great grip on the gun,” Foster said. “My plan was, as soon as he hit the floor, it would cause him to drop it. But he didn’t drop it.”
He said it took three or four minutes of struggling with the gunman before he finally wrested the weapon away.
The gunman had six live rounds in his pocket. “He was prepared to shoot even more,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Pastor William Boss and associate pastor Carl Stewart were shot from behind, authorities said. Boss, who was shot in the head, and Stewart, shot three times in the back and ear, were in critical condition Sunday. No one else at the church was hurt.
“Of all the places you should be safe, you should be safe in a house of worship,” Judd said. “Especially on a Sunday morning.”
As deputies began investigating, a church member advised that they check on Fogle’s wife, who lived with him a block away in a neighborhood of mobile homes, humble houses and industrial shops. Investigators and relatives say 56-year-old Theresa Fogle was found slain inside, apparently killed before her husband went to the church.
“We don’t know exactly why he went in to this mad rage,” Judd said.
Officials said Jeremiah Fogle would be charged with murder and could face additional charges. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
Theresa Fogle’s sister Maria Beauford said the couple married in 2002 and ran a transportation business together. They had been members of Greater Faith Christian CenterChurch, where the shootings happened, but had started their own ministry out of their house and regularly hosted Sunday services, Beauford said.
Beauford said she had never known Jeremiah Fogle to be violent toward her sister. He had been sick over the past year and had back surgery, and Theresa Fogle nursed him back to health, Beauford said. She said her brother-in-law was always smiling at family gatherings.

Georgia executes convict in high-profile case

JACKSON, Georgia - The U.S. state of Georgia executed convicted murderer Troy Davis on Wednesday in a case that drew international attention because of claims by his advocates that he may have been innocent.
Davis was put to death by lethal injection at 11:08 p.m. EDT/0308 GMT on Thursday at a prison in central Georgia for the murder of a police officer in 1989, prisons spokeswoman Kristen Stancil said. The execution was delayed by more than four hours as the U.S. Supreme Court considered whether to issue a stay.
The case provoked protests and an online petition accumulated nearly a million signatures because of doubts expressed in some quarters over whether he killed police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989.
MacPhail was shot and killed outside a Burger King restaurant in Savannah, Georgia, as he went to the aide of a homeless man who was being beaten. MacPhail's family say Davis is guilty and his son witnessed the execution.
Since Davis's conviction, seven of nine witnesses have changed or recanted their testimony, some have said they were coerced by police to testify against him and some say another man committed the crime.
No physical evidence linked Davis to the killing.
Davis went to his death saying he was innocent, according to journalists who witnessed the execution.
"The incident that night was not my fault. I did not have a gun," Davis said, according to Rhonda Cook of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.
"I did not personally kill your son, father and brother. I am innocent," Cook quoted Davis as telling members of MacPhail's family who were present in the death chamber.
Hundreds of protesters rallied outside Georgia Diagnostic and Classification prison earlier, chanting "I am Troy Davis" and other slogans and a cheer briefly went up when it was reported that the execution had been delayed.
But the crowd dwindled as the evening wore on, and by the time the execution took place they were outnumbered by police in riot gear. Most of Davis' supporters slipped away in silence as the execution was announced.
"This is a tragic moment. We were hoping for a different result," said Raphael Warnock, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, whose church was once led by slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

ONE SENTENCE ORDER
A majority of Americans support the death penalty and most executions attract little national attention, but the Davis case prompted a rash of protests as well as expressions of concern from Europe.
France and the Council of Europe this week urged U.S. authorities to stay the execution.
Defense attorney Thomas Ruffin put Davis' death in a racial and class context, and pointed out that a disproportionate number of inmates in Georgia's prisons and on death row are black men, as was Davis.
"This night the state of Georgia legally lynched a brave, a good and indeed an innocent man," Ruffin told a news conference, in a reference to the lynchings of blacks in Georgia and other southern states from after the Civil War through the 1960s.

The Supreme Court took the rare step in 2009 of allowing the defense to present its case to an evidentiary hearing but a federal judge in Savannah said it cast "minimal doubt" on the conviction.
Once a death warrant was signed, Davis's best hope of avoiding execution had rested with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, but on Tuesday it denied him clemency following a one-day hearing.
On Wednesday, his lawyers went through a series of maneuverers in an attempt to stay the execution, finally reaching the Supreme Court.
It took the court more than four hours to issue its one-sentence order, an unusually long time in such cases.
Brian Kammer, a lawyer for Davis, said in seeking a stay from the Supreme Court that newly available evidence revealed false, misleading and inaccurate information was presented at the trial, "rendering the convictions and death sentence fundamentally unreliable."
A handful of supporters of capital punishment in the case also protested separately from Davis' supporters.

Mexican man charged in San Diego border shooting

A Mexican man who was shot by border inspectors was charged Friday with assaulting a federal officer, accused of raising a starter gun as he tried to flee the nation's busiest border crossing on foot.
Customs and Border Protection officers shot Hugo Veytia as he wrestled with inspectors at the San Ysidro port of entry, according to a federal complaint. Veytia allegedly pulled a replica gun _ the kind used to start an auto race _ from his waist and pointed it at officers and travelers.
Veytia, 47, of Tijuana, underwent surgery and was expected to survive, authorities said.
Thursday's shooting closed San Ysidro to U.S.-bound pedestrians for two hours as hundreds of travelers stood in line. Dan Swezy, who was returning from a doctor's appointment in Tijuana, heard about eight shots.
"Everybody started dropping to the ground," Swezy said Friday. "I didn't know if it was because they were hit or because they were trying to get out of the way. It was a lot of chaos and hysteria."
Swezy and others ran toward Mexico, with federal officers close behind.
"They were running toward us with their guns out, screaming at us to get out of the way and get down," he said.
Swezy, 49, said he was among about 200 people held in a courtyard for questioning as potential witnesses. People were shaken and children cried. He missed his flight home to Tucson, Ariz.
According to the complaint, Veytia tried to walk past a border inspector without providing identification and got into a scuffle with officers as he headed for the exit to the United States.
San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney said Veytia fired the starter gun once into the air. The complaint says only that Veytia raised what looked like a silver handgun.
"It appears to be a semiautomatic weapon to the naked eye," said Rooney. "It's metal, silver in color, with rubber grips on it."
Rooney declined to say how many times Veytia was shot or where.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pursued charges against Veytia, who did not have an attorney listed in court documents. San Diego police are investigating whether the officers' use of force was justified.
About 50,000 vehicles and 25,000 pedestrians enter the United States at the San Ysidro border crossing each day.
Last week, all U.S.-bound traffic was halted at the crossing after scaffolding installed to protect cars from overhead construction collapsed onto eight lanes, seriously injuring a construction worker. Ten others were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
