Christmas morning blaze kills 5 in Connecticut family

An elderly couple and their three granddaughters were killed when fire
 roared through a house in Stamford, Connecticut, early on Christmas
 morning. Two people, including the girls' mother, survived,

 The owner of the house was identified as Madonna Badger, "and the
 people who perished were her mother and father, who were visiting ...

 Badger and a male acquaintance, described as a contractor who was

 Firefighters attempted to rescue those trapped in the burning house,
 but "they were pushed back by intense flame and heat," Conte said. He
 added that the cause of the fire was under investigation.
 Video footage showed flames engulfing a house in a residential
 district of large homes.
 Emergency workers later recovered the victims' bodies, but Conte said
 it could take a number of days for investigators to determine the
 origins of the blaze.
 Stamford is located on Connecticut's shore on Long Island Sound, about
 40 miles northeast of New York City.

Seven shot dead in "Christmas Capital of Texas"

Police in a Dallas suburb dubbed the "Christmas Capital of Texas"
 searched for clues on Monday to explain the apparent murder-suicide
 rampage that left seven people shot dead among unwrapped holiday
 presents.
 The dead -- four women and three men, one of them believed to be the
 gunman -- were found late Sunday morning in an apartment living room
 in the town of Grapevine by police answering a voiceless 911 emergency
 call, authorities said.
 Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Sergeant Robert
 Eberling of the Grapevine police department, who called it a "gruesome
 crime scene" and the worst outburst of gun violence in the town's
 history.
 Circumstances of the shooting remained sketchy, but Eberling said it
 appeared as though the bloodbath unfolded during a family holiday
 celebration as one man opened fire on six other people in the
 apartment, then killed himself.
 No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.
 A community of about 46,000 people some 20 miles northwest of downtown
 Dallas, Grapevine is known for its wine-tasting salons and was
 recently proclaimed by the state Senate as the "Christmas Capital of
 Texas" for its abundance of annual holiday-season events.
 "This is obviously a terrible tragedy," Mayor William Tate said Sunday
 night in a statement given to Reuters. "The fact that it happened on
 Christmas makes it even more tragic. This appears to be a family
 situation and anyone who has a family will be incredibly saddened by
 that happened."
 VOICELESS 911 CALL
 Police dispatched at about 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday found the
 bodies in the first-floor living room of a two-story unit in the
 Lincoln Vineyards apartments, police said.
 The 911 caller never spoke to police, and officers did not see the
 telephone when they arrived, officials said. Eberling said he believed
 police had to kick in the door to enter. No neighbors reported hearing
 gunshots, he said.
 Eberling said the victims appeared to have just opened Christmas
 presents when the shooting started, and there was no visible sign of
 forced entry or a struggle.
 "By all appearances, they're all part of the same family," Eberling
 said. "It's a gruesome crime scene to say the least, with that many
 victims in that (small an) area suffering gunshot wounds."
 Two of the dead were believed to be in their 50s or 60s, while the
 others appeared to be young adults, ranging in age from about 18 to 20
 years, according to police.
 Authorities did not immediately identify the victims and did not
 speculate on a possible motive for the shooting.
 The bodies remained in the apartment well past dark as investigators
 worked into the early hours of Monday morning processing the crime
 scene, police said.
 Lincoln Vineyards is a middle-income complex near Colleyville Heritage
 High School, one of the area's most highly regarded schools.
 Several neighbors told Reuters that children frequently played in
 front of the apartment, and they regularly saw young adults leaving
 for work.
 Vanessa Barerra said the killings were especially disturbing in light
 of Grapevine's reputation as a safe place to live.
 "I did research and chose to live here because of the safety and the
 school district," she said. "I'm glad my kids weren't here. They're
 with their dad."

California soldier shot at his homecoming party

 and opened fire.
 The gunman fled the scene before police arrived.
 Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar
 while serving with the 101st Infantry Division. He suffered a cracked
 collar bone and brain damage in the attack and has been recovering in
 Kentucky where he is stationed. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
 Sullivan was home on leave when the shooting occurred.

Christmas Trees on North Korean border are ‘psychological warfare’

Tis the season for psychological warfare? While Christmas trees around the world symbolize peace on earth and good will toward men, Seoul’s plan to hang lights near the most militarized border in the world has North Korea vowing to retaliate.
­Seoul has decided to allow a church group to hang lights on a Christmas tree-shaped towers some two miles from the tense border. 
When illuminated, the 100-foot tall structure, which is located on the military-controlled Aegibong Hill, can easily be seen from the North Korean city of Kaesong.
Additionally, the South Korean government  also decided Sunday to allow other Christian groups to light two more front-line Christmas trees, a Defense Ministry official said, the Associated Press reports. 
The official, speaking under condition of anonymity, said the move is meant to help guarantee freedom of expression and religion. 
The South Korean military has plans to heighten security around the three tree-shaped towers, which are located at different points along the border. 
However, North Korea’s official Uriminzokkiri news website said plans by South Korea to spread Christmas cheer amounted to “psychological warfare”, and that Pyongyang would retaliate immediately if Seoul went ahead with its plans, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports.
“The enemy warmongers… should be aware that they should be held responsible entirely for any unexpected consequences that may be caused by their scheme,” it said.
“This issue… is not something to be ignored quietly,” AFP cited the website as saying.     
Pyongyang has in the past accused its southern neighbor of using the Christmas lights to spread Christianity within the closed Communist state.  
Propaganda battles have been a regular feature of relations between the two sides since the Korean War reached a de facto end in 1953, though no peace treaty was ever signed.  
But in 2004, the two Koreas reached a deal to halt border propaganda operations, which included the South’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony
However, in 2010, the tree was illuminated for the first time in seven years after the South accused the North of carrying out two deadly attacks.  
After relations chilled that year, the South took to regularly dropping propaganda leaflets from airplanes and using large electronic panels to shine its messages across the border.  
Private citizens have also used “balloon diplomacy” to deliver both provisions and messages via large helium balloons.   

Perhaps more bizarrely, Seoul decided to reinstall 14 massive speakers on the border. The speakers, which regularly air a radio program called “The Voice of Freedom”, proclaim the greatness of living in the South to everyone within earshot.
One of the messages aimed at the North Koreans  – who are frequently dependent on food aid from the outside world – conveys the news that food is available in such abundance south of the border that obesity has become a problem as people simply have too much to eat.

Woman denied food stamps kills self, shoots children

A woman in the border city of Laredo, Texas who was angry because she had been denied food stamps killed herself and shot and critically wounded her two children late on Monday, authorities said on Tuesday.
The 38-year-old woman entered the Texas Health and Human Services Commission office in downtown Laredo on Monday afternoon and demanded to speak to a supervisor, said investigator Joe Baeza of the Laredo Police Department.
The woman, whom he declined to identify, pulled out a handgun and started walking through the office, threatening several employees, he said.
"She had issues and felt that she had been let down by social services in general," Baeza told Reuters on Tuesday. "She was making all sorts of outlandish claims."
She took an office supervisor hostage in a room in the office, he said, and a SWAT team managed to evacuate the other three dozen people in the office and clear the area.
After two hours of negotiations, the woman allowed the male supervisor to go free, but she remained in the office with her two children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl.
"About 11:45 last night, she hung up the phone with negotiators, and a little bit later, negotiators heard three shots," Baeza said on Tuesday. "What had happened was that she had shot each of her children once and herself once."
The children were airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio in extremely critical condition, he said. The mother was dead at the scene, he said.
Baeza said the woman, who was from Ohio, arrived in Laredo about eight months ago and had lived with her children in several locations around the border city of 236,000.
Stephanie Goodman, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Commission, confirmed that the woman applied for food stamps in July and was denied. Goodman said the woman's application was incomplete and that she was not sure whether the woman qualified for assistance.
"We're still trying to track down exactly what happened with the case," she told Reuters. "As you can probably imagine, I think she had a lot of other issues she was dealing with as well."
Baeza credited the supervisor with remaining calm and allowing officers to evacuate the other employees and members of the public who were in the building.
He had been with the state agency for 24 years and had been a supervisor since 2000, Goodman said. She said the commission will provide counseling for its workers.
"They go into this profession because they really want to help people, so when something like this happens, it's doubly traumatic for them," she said.
She also said the commission will look at what it needs to do to ensure its offices are safe for staff and the public. She said there was an unarmed security guard on duty on Monday at the Laredo office, where Texans can go to apply for food stamps and other programs.
"This is the kind of thing you hear of happening in other places, but not in our quiet home town," Baeza said.

Who is to blame for the crisis in Attawapiskat?

Opposition parties in Ottawa have been quick to lay blame on the Harper government for the dire situation in Attawapiskat.
The northern Ontario First Nations' community of 2,800 residents, is facing a severe housing shortage with many residents forced to live in makeshift tents and shacks without heat, electricity or indoor plumbing.
NDP MP Charlie Angus, who brought national attention to the story, has led the charge against the Conservatives suggesting the government's "indifference" has resulted in the "misery, suffering and even the death of First Nations people."
Interim Liberal leader Bob Rae called the situation a "national disgrace."
Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo told CTV News, the situation is the result of systemic problems between Ottawa and Aboriginal communities.
Certainly the Harper government is culpable for allowing the situation in Attawapiskat to get as bad as it has but there is much more to this story.
In parliament, Tuesday, Harper noted that, since coming in to office, his government has given Attawapiskat $90 million - that is over $50,000 for every man, woman and child in the community, the Edmonton Journal reported.
In the National Post, columnist John Ivison notes the band of received $17-million in funding from the federal government last year, around half of its $34-milllion in revenues.
Ivison notes the average income on northern reserves is rarely much more than $10,000 a year, but some people on Attawapiskat are faring better than others, namely those who work for the band.
The acting chief, for example, earned $71,000 last year, the technical services manager pocketed $87,000 and the acting band manager racked up $68,000 in travel expenses in just two months.  In total, wages, employee benefits and administration accounted for $14.4-million.
Ivison also recounted a story told to him by a  young man who recently returned from teaching on a northern Ontario reserve.
"He said the social problems on reserves are compounded by abysmal leadership," Ivison wrote.
"For example, every spring, hunters on his reserve would be ferried to hunting camp by helicopter — using money that could have been spent on housing or education."
It seems, in Attawapiskat, there is plenty of blame to go around.
