3 killed, 27 wounded over eight hours in Chicago, including boy, 7
After a relatively quiet start to the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago, a burst of gun violence overnight left three dead and 27 people wounded in just eight hours, including a 7-year-old boy killed after returning from a celebration.
"It's crazy," said Vedia Hailey, the grandmother of the boy, Amari Brown. "Who would shoot a 7-year-old in the chest? Who would do that to a baby? When is it going to stop?"
From 9:20 p.m Saturday until 4:45 a.m. Sunday, 30 people were shot across Chicago, three of them fatally, including Amari.
The other victims included a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl shot shortly after midnight as they walked in Old Town, and a 19-year-old man shot around 10 p.m. Saturday as two groups fought near Navy Pier after the fireworks display.
Several of the shootings across the city involved multiple victims: Four people shot in one incident in Austin, three shot in Albany Park, and two victims in shootings in the West Chesterfield, Humboldt Park, Old Town and Fuller Park neighborhoods

“We Have to Live With You N******”: Ala. Councilman Receives Racist Confederate Letter

One Alabama city councilman has become the target of racism as the consequence of the Confederate flag debate that has overtaken the country.
Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson received a racially offensive letter on Wednesday, according to local affiliate FOX 10.
Richardson posted the letter on his Facebook page with the caption: “LOVE or HATE: You decide. It came to my office today.”
Richardson told FOX10 that he has no plans to turn the letter over to police.
“Hate is out there,” Richardson said. “The umbrella I live under is large enough for haters. It’s room for haters. But I love everybody.”
There is currently before the council a proposal to replace the third national flag with the one for the state of Alabama, Al.com reports:
Richardson said it’s not the state’s job to “preserve heritage.”
“I don’t think City Hall should be the place to preserve anybody’s heritage. I think museums should be the place for that,” he said. “We’re not trying to preserve nobody’s heritage down here. We’re trying to transact the business of the city.”

Black woman loves the Confederate Flag, says “slavery was a choice”

It’s not so often that you see a black person who is proud of the Confederate flag. But African Americans have a unique relationship with racism, with some members of the black community seeming to go as far as supporting White Supremacy as if they were members of the klan.
A woman in Virginia is not only proudly displaying the Confederate flag, she is also saying that “slavery was a choice.” This has clearly baffled those who don’t understand where she might be coming from.
Karen Cooper is getting national media attention for her views and is a member of the group, “Virginia Flaggers,” which defends the rebel flag against detractors.  Cooper says that the flag’s critics, “worship ignorance, historical revisionism and political correctness.”
Cooper is also a member of the Tea Party and says that the flag represents her personal battle against big government.
“I actually think that it represents freedom,” she said in the film, “Battle Flag.” “It represents a people who stood up to tyranny.”

A Former Prostitute Speaks About Her 25 Years Of Unfortunate Experience

Brenda Myers-Powell was just a child when she was pushed into becoming a prostitute in the early 1970s. She describes her experiences and how she was pulled into working on the streets and why three decades later she is now a devoted inspiration to the lives of other girls. Working to spread the word in hopes that other young women don’t fall into the same misfortunes as her, she has made it her business to inspire.
Some of you may find Brenda’s accounts upsetting.
Right from the start, Brenda felt that life was handing her lemons, but she always tried to make the best lemonade with the ones that she had.
Brenda grew up in the 1960s on the West Side of Chicago. Her mother passed at 16 when Brenda was only six months old. Never having the opportunity to learn what it was that her mother had passed away from, her grandmother who suffered a drinking problem never told her. The official explanation that she was given was “natural causes”.
She didn’t believe that. Who dies at 16-years-old from natural causes anyway?

Country’s First Gay Divorce Firm Opens In Philadelphia

(Credit: Hector Mata/ AFP/ Getty Images)
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Philadelphia attorney has opened what he says is the first LGBTQ divorce firm.
Philadelphia lawyer Conor Corcoran, who bills himself as the nation’s first gay divorce attorney, says he is ready to serve gays and lesbians that will need divorces following the Supreme Court’s ruling last week legalizing same-sex marriage across the country.
Corcoran says he celebrated the Supreme Court decision to have marriage equality throughout the United States, but he quickly realized it was unlikely all of the new marriages would end in bliss.
He says that is why he launched a new division entirely devoted to LGBT divorce.
“The genesis of this idea began about a year ago when Judge Jones, out in Harrisburg, legalized marriage for all in Pennsylvania. I was out that night with a couple of friends and I came up with that idea. We were talking about the fact that, at some point down the line, there’s going to be a need for gays to get divorced, and I thought wouldn’t be funny if that website was calledAdamVsSteve.com. Then the year went by and I thought more and more about it, I realized that there really is a certain kind of empowerment and benevolence in taking what was formerly a derogatory term or a denigration and turning it into some matter of empowerment. And it’s for a good service. These people are entitled to equal rights just like the rest of us.”

S.C. Women Pastors Receiving Threatening Letters From “Apostle Prophet”

Even though South Carolina shooter Dylann Roof is in custody, some black church pastors in thepastor rhodes state haven’t been able to let their guard down due to new threats.
Three churches have reported receiving letters threatening violence. In painful irony, the writer of the letter uses Bible verses to threaten female pastors.
One letter, addressed to Pastor Mary Rhodes, was left at Society Hill AME Church on June 10th.
“Whoever wrote this letter has taken the rime to find out who I am which means you may know my children, my grandchildren, and I have no clue who you are” Pastor Rhodes told WISTV.
Another letter left for Pastor Valarie Bartley said that “the woman cannot be head of the man in church, home and the world.”
“A lot of people do not respect female pastors,” Rhodes said. “Sexism in the church has been around for the longest time and it always gets, to my opinion, sort of hidden under the other issues that are there.”
Both letters were signed by “Apostle Prophet” Harry Leon Fleming.“The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their quest in attempt to locate the person or persons responsible for distributing the letters and will have deputies posted at every church that received the letter,” a statement from Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett read. “The citizens of Clarendon County will be able to worship in peace…”

SC church fire due to weather, not arson, investigation concludes

In a week that has seen  more than its share of church fires, there was speculation that a recent fire at yet another historic church in Charleston, South Carolina was the result of arson.  But investigators are saying that this was not the case at all.
According to MSNBC, law enforcement is proclaiming, after their investigation, that the fire at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church was due to weather, not arson.
A statement from the State Law Enforcement Division says that the investigation is now complete and they do not suspect foul play.   If their assessment is accurate, this is surprising to those who’d speculated on the origins of the fire. The case drew suspicion because the church is just 50 miles away from the “Mother Emanuel” church in Charleston where nine people were killed on June 17.

Police said they are worried about a new drug making the rounds, said to be stronger than meth, cocaine and even bath salts.
The drug is called “flakka” — and police said it literally makes people go insane. The reason why it’s becoming a drug on the rise is because the euphoric state it gives its users, medical professionals said.
In high doses it can cause delirium, where the body’s temperature can rise up to 105 degrees.
But people on flakka may also experience hallucinations, paranoia, anxiety, insomnia and even violent aggression.
“They’re hallucinating,” said Dr. Nabilel Sanadi. “They’re on a psychotic state, they may have superhuman strength.”

Raleigh woman removes Confederate flag in front of SC statehouse

COLUMBIA, South Carolina — A 30-year-old woman from Raleigh has been charged after she removed the Confederate battle flag that flies in front of the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia, S.C.
Brittany Ann Byuarim Newsome was about halfway up the more than 30-foot steel flagpole just after dawn Saturday when State Capitol police told her to come down.
Instead, Newsome, who was wearing climbing gear, continued up and removed the flag before returning to the ground. Video posted on YouTube showed Newsome's climb.
Newsome is charged with defacing state property. James Ian Tyson, 30, of Charlotte, was also arrested for entering the wrought-iron fence surrounding the flag. The charge is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of up to $5,000 and a prison term of up to three years or both.
A replacement flag was returned to the flagpole about an hour after Newsome's climb, officials said.
Newsome posted bond Saturday afternoon, her attorney Todd Rutherford told WRAL News. About the time of her arrest, Newsome released an email statement to the media.
"We removed the flag today because we can't wait any longer. We can't continue like this another day," it said. "It's time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality."
Authorities said Newsome was from Raleigh. However, Mervyn Marcano, a spokesman for the small group of activists who worked together to take down the flag, said she had recently moved to Charlotte

Supreme Court Ruling Makes Same-Sex Marriage a Right Nationwide

WASHINGTON — In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.
“No longer may this liberty be denied,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the historic decision. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”
Marriage is a “keystone of our social order,” Justice Kennedy said, adding that the plaintiffs in the case were seeking “equal dignity in the eyes of the law.”

The decision, which was the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, set off jubilation and tearful embraces across the country, the first same-sex marriages in several states, and resistance — or at least stalling — in others. It came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of the unions.
The court’s four more liberal justices joined Justice Kennedy’s majority opinion. Each member of the court’s conservative wing filed a separate dissent, in tones ranging from resigned dismay to bitter scorn.
In dissent, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said the Constitution had nothing to say on the subject of same-sex marriage.
“If you are among the many Americans — of whatever sexual orientation — who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision,” Chief Justice Roberts wrote. “Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”
In a second dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia mocked the soaring language of Justice Kennedy, who has become the nation’s most important judicial champion of gay rights.
“The opinion is couched in a style that is as pretentious as its content is egotistic,” Justice Scalia wrote of his colleague’s work. “Of course the opinion’s showy profundities are often profoundly incoherent.”
As Justice Kennedy finished announcing his opinion from the bench on Friday, several lawyers seated in the bar section of the court’s gallery wiped away tears, while others grinned and exchanged embraces.
Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired in 2010, was on hand for the decision, and many of the justices’ clerks took seats in the chamber, which was nearly full as the ruling was announced. The decision made same-sex marriage a reality in the 13 states that had continued to ban it.
Outside the Supreme Court, the police allowed hundreds of people waving rainbow flags and holding signs to advance onto the court plaza as those present for the decision streamed down the steps. “Love has won,” the crowd chanted as courtroom witnesses threw up their arms in victory.
