Women Financially Devastated When Men Go To Prison, Especially Minority Women

Ending up in prison, locked up behind bars is having an adverse impact on the financial stability of society as a whole; but it is women who are suffering the most.

It took ten years for Carla Gonzalez’s parents to rein in the debt they found themselves in after her brother was sentenced to prison for bringing undocumented immigrants across the border.

“Emotionally, it has taxed our family a lot. My mother in particular went through a huge depression and lost about 60 pounds the first three months of him being in jail,” Gonzalez said.

Their family is one of millions that are being punished by a system that also affects the loved ones of those behind bars. According to one study by Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, in California, Forward Together, and other civil rights organizations, there are over 2.4 million families that have found themselves in similarly dire situations.

Gonzalez, 32, who also took part in the study said, “My family knew that if we let him have a public defender he would probably never come out of jail. So we had to hire a private layer with an estimate of $150,000. Obviously that’s not something that somebody has in their back pocket, so my parents went into serious debt.”

The money was obtained by refinancing their family home, working multiple jobs and even cutting back on food – just because the family didn’t want her brother to spend the remainder of his life behind bars.

The study looks at how over 300 families are impacted by a loved one’s incarceration by way of court fees, visitation expenses and basic necessities like food all adding up quickly to bury them in mountains of debt.

The most affected are women – at 83% – as they are the ones that mainly take on the debts, and half of them are women of color.

NC police chief out after calling Black Lives Matter a ‘terrorist’ group on Facebook

SURF CITY, N.C.(WECT) – Surf City Police Chief Mike Halstead has retired effective immediately following a Tuesday emergency meeting called about a Facebook post he made.

Major Ron Shanahan will take over as interim chief.

Town leaders and Halstead have agreed on severance pay following his decision to retire.

According to Town Manager Larry Bergman, Surf City Mayor Zander Guy called the emergency meeting in reference to Halstead’s post he made to his personal page on Sept. 3.

Bergman said he spoke with Halstead about the post after it was brought to his attention.

He said he reminded him “that as public employees we are often held to higher level of scrutiny and that even if it is a personal social media account and despite not associating himself directly to the Town in his posting, that some will draw the connection.”

Bergman also said the chief is apologetic for how his statements have been interpreted, and that he removed the post on his own accord.

The emergency meeting was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Surf City Town Hall.

Wednesday morning a group gathered outside of the Police Department holding signs that said “Honk for Halstead” and “We Support Chief Halstead.”

“I was shocked and disgusted with our Town Council,” said Brandy Cuff, who was part of the protest. “No other words, just disgust.” She said Halstead was unfairly forced to retire. “We have freedom of speech,” Cuff said.”Someone who spent 35 years of dedicated service can’t post his opinion, or have an opinion about that?

‘He’s a f*cking kid': Video shows nine California cops arrest sobbing black teen ‘for jaywalking’

Video shows nine police California officers arrested a black teenager and slammed him on to concrete while arresting him for jaywalking.

Witnesses said a Stockton police officer ordered the teenager to sit down, but the teen instead continued walking toward a waiting bus, reported RT.

                                

Bystander Edgar Avendaño, who recorded the video, said the officer grabbed the teen’s arm in attempt to stop him and then pulled out his baton after the teen “took off the cop’s hand off his arm.”

Stockton police told VICE News that the 16-year-old teen did not respond to an officer’s request to get out of the bus lane.

“For safety reasons, the officer told the young man to get on the sidewalk,” officer Joseph Silva said. “After the teenager refused to comply and used obscene language, the officer went over and a there was a scuffle.”

Police said the officer was wearing a body camera, but the device was knocked off during the initial confrontation.

CTE Found in 95% of Deceased NFL Players

In recent years, the National Football League has come under a controversial firestorm regarding the safety of the game. Many have been led to believe the constant hits over a regular professional career have led to the disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, also known as CTE. But according to a recent study by the Department of Veterans Affairs, this can very well be the case. Partnered with Boston University, the two entities discovered that 87 out of 91 deceased players had the presence of CTE in their brains.

But the data did not stop at just NFL players. Researchers looked at a total of 165 indiviudals who played football at the professional, semi-professional, college and high school levels; out of that sample, roughly 131 players had CTE in their brain tissue. That is alarming when considering that high school sports have been increasing for years.

One of the hang ups about the testing is that CTE is only defined posthumously but brain scans search for signs of the disease while subjects are living. Thus, many players request that their brains be donated to science for CTE research. Dr. Ann McKee, the director of the research facility, says that this is an issue not to be taken lightly.

Two Black Preacher’s Reveal ‘Down-Low’ Lifestyles On ‘Iyanla : Fix My Life’

Two homosexual pastors, who have been secretly gay for years, are now planning to reveal their “down low” lifestyles to their families as well as their congregations in an emotional three-part series premiere on OWN’s ‘Iyanla: Fix My Life.’

Mitchell was married with five children and spent many years preaching against homosexuality.  However, he was also having affairs with men behind his wife’s back.

“This isn’t anything I ever wanted to involve anybody else in,” Mitchell helplessly weeped to Vanzant. “Nobody needs to deal with this. This is all my stuff.”

The city of Baltimore announced an agreement Tuesday to pay $6.4 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old man black man who died in April after police damaged three vertebrae in his spine while in police custody. This young brother died at the hands of devils for committing the crime of being black in America.

Detroit Father Shoots Armed Teen Who Attempted to Steal Sunglasses

A Detroit man says were it not for his quick thinking, he’d be either dead or injured.

A 17 year old is hospitalized in critical condition after Joe Lanier, a 24 year old father, shot him multiple times.

According to Lanier, the armed teen attempted to rob him of his sunglasses, so Lanier opened fire, using the gun for which he has a concealed carry permit.

“He was on my window with his gun. If I wasn’t on my P’s and Q’s, I would have been gone,” Lanier, told local affiliate WXYZ.

Lanier believes being armed saved his life.

“That’s why [the assailant is] in the hospital and not me.”

Lanier was sitting in his vehicle while on the job as an exterminator when confronted by the armed teen who pulled a gun and demanded Lanier’s sunglasses. Lanier fired several shots.

“The boy tried to rob me and I shot him,” he said.

Lanier then called 911. Lanier’s mother, Angelia Lanier, says she is a licensed instructor and has always taught her kids how to defend themselves.

“F***king N******”: Black Family Allegedly Terrorized by Campers

Last weekend a black family pitched a tent on Rollins Lake in Nevada City, California as part of a family reunion. They intended on enjoying a little camping by the lake, but instead, say they were harassed by a family who set up camp nearby.

Family members say everything initially went well as they set up camp at Greenhorn

The family wanted to “have fun on the lake, we pitched the tents, we bring the food, we cook the ribs,” Kanisha Allen said.

“We thought Rollins Lake would be a perfect place,” Allen said, according to USA Today.

Allen saying they were all getting along swimmingly until another family arrived and set up camp beside them.

“Some of the other campers from the rowdier group were just staring over and making racial comments,” she said.

Police: Boy, 7, dead, 3 hurt after North Carolina shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte police officers are being called back in from days off and vacations after five people have been killed and five others hurt in shootings during a violent Labor Day holiday weekend in North Carolina's largest city.

The dead include a 7-year-old boy killed during a birthday party around 9 p.m. Saturday in a front yard in southwest Charlotte. Another child and two other adults were wounded, but their injuries were not life threatening, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Deputy Chief Jeff Estes said.

"It's a sad state of affairs in the city and our country when a 7-year-old boy can't be free to celebrate a birthday party without being murdered," Estes said at a news conference Sunday.

Police haven't identified suspects or a motive in Kevin Antonio Calderon Rodas' death. The other three fatal shootings this weekend also remain unsolved, Estes said.

The sudden spate of violence led officials to call in officers from days off and vacation to help patrol and investigate, Estes said.

"We think it is an absolute tragedy that in Charlotte-Mecklenburg we are seeing this type of violence," Estes said. "We will not rest or not stop until we do everything we can to put a stop to it."

Boko Haram killers on horseback massacre nearly 80 in NE Nigeria

Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Suspected Boko Haram gunmen on horseback shot dead nearly 80 people in attacks on three villages in Nigeria's restive northeast at the weekend, a vigilante and residents told AFP on Monday.

The attacks were the latest bloodbath in the six-year-old insurgency by the extremist group aimed at carving out an Islamic state in the volatile region.

Babakura Kolo, a vigilante fighting Boko Haram, said 68 people were killed in the attack on Baanu village in Borno state late on Friday while residents said another 11 people were shot dead in two other villages on Saturday and Sunday.

"Reports reached us of an attack on Baanu village late Friday where Boko Haram gunmen riding on horses opened fire on the village. Sixty-eight people were killed in the attack," Kolo told AFP.

He said the gunmen stormed Baanu around 8.30 pm (1930 GMT), shooting sporadically.

Baanu resident Aisami Ari who fled the attack to the state capital Maiduguri on Saturday, also confirmed the attack and the death toll.

"The attackers came on horses around 8.30 pm and began shooting sporadically. The whole village was thrown into confusion and everybody fled. We returned after they had gone and found out they had killed 68 people in the village," he said.

"Most of us left the village on Saturday for fear of a fresh attack," he added.

Arizona woman acknowledges drowning twin sons

PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona woman told investigators that she drowned her 2-year-old twin sons and tried to kill her 3-year-old stepbrother in the same way because she didn't want them to live with the difficulties she faces.

Court records released Monday say 22-year-old Mireya Alejandra Lopez told investigators that she takes medication for depression, schizophrenia and psychosis. Still, investigators say it's unknown whether her mental condition was linked to the deaths or whether the difficulties she cited were psychological issues.

Lopez offered several reasons for the attacks, including that her kids were bullied and that her stepbrother rarely ate and was anti-social. She also said she and her twins weren't loved, investigators said in court records.

Daniel Marino, who identified himself as the step-grandfather of the twins, briefly spoke with reporters outside of the home, saying the "two little angels did not deserve that at all."

Marino said Lopez was recently released from mental health treatment.

Lopez is accused of drowning her sons Sunday in a bathtub at her stucco house in suburban Avondale and then wrapping them in a blanket. Police also said she stuck a pen in the neck of one of her sons to ensure that he would die

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's call for the mass deportation of millions of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally as well as their American-born children bears similarities to a large-scale removal that many Mexican-American families faced 85 years ago.

During the 1930s Great Depression, counties and cities in the American Southwest and Midwest forced Mexican immigrants and their families to leave the U.S. over concerns they were taking jobs away from whites despite their legal right to stay.

The result: Around 500,000 to 1 million Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans were pushed out of United States during the so-called 1930s' repatriation.

At that time, immigrants were rounded up and sent to Mexico, sometimes in public places and often without formal proceedings. Others, scared by the violence, left voluntarily.

About 60 percent of those who left were American citizens, according to various studies on the 1930s' repatriation. Later testimonies show families lost most of their possessions and some family members died trying to return. Neighborhoods in cities such as Houston, San Antonio and Los Angeles became empty.

Kansas public school removes Jesus picture after group complain

A Kansas public school has removed a picture of Jesus that hung in a hallway for decades after a complaint from a national church-state separation group, The Wichita Eaglereported.

Royster Middle School removed the print of Warner Sallman’s “Head of Christ” last Thursday, following a complaint from the national Freedom From Religion Foundation, Richard Profitt, the school superintendent, said Friday.

“Oh man, it’s getting bad,” said Erika Semey, who attended Royster 10 years ago. “That’s what’s wrong with this world. Not enough people have Christ in their lives.”

Ryan Jayne, a spokesman for the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which is dedicated to the principle of separation of church and state, said it’s “wonderful” that the picture has been taken down so quickly.

“It’s nice to have people who appreciate the law and get things done (and) who follow the law even if it’s likely to be unpopular in the community,” Jayne said.

It is the second time that Jayne has worked with Proffitt to resolve an issue of religion at a school.

Baby’s heart ‘still beating’ after abortion, according to new anti-Planned Parenthood video

The group that is accusing Planned Parenthood of breaking federal laws in its abortion procedures released their seventh video Wednesday.

The Center for Medical Progress, a California-based anti-abortion group, published a heavily edited video featuring undercover footage, on-camera interviews and a CNN appearance from CMP leader Daniel Daleiden accusing Planned Parenthood of altering its abortion procedure to acquire intact fetuses.

‘Mutant’ Lice Resistant to Treatment Found in 25 States

Lice populations in the states in pink have developed a high level of resistance to some of the most common treatments.

Head lice are freaky enough as-is, but new research has discovered there’s a strain of mutant lice that is resistant to over-the-counter treatments — and they’re found in at least 25 U.S. states.

Kyong Sup Yoon, PhD, an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University, presented his findings Tuesday at the American Chemical Society’s National Meeting & Exposition.

Yoon and his team collected lice samples from a large number of populations across 30 states in the U.S. They discovered that 104 out of 109 lice populations had high levels of gene mutations, which make them resistant to pyrethroids.

GARY MOM GETS 24-YEAR SENTENCE IN INFANT PORNOGRAPHY CASE

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A northwest Indiana mother learned her fate for selling her daughter for use in producing child pornography.

Natisha Hillard of Gary was sentenced to 24 years in prison on Wednesday. 

Prosecutors say Hillard pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the sale of her infant daughter to 39-year-old Christopher Bour of Gary.

He was sentenced to life in prison last month.

Man shot, stabbed to death outside Central Tower apartments

Investigators say a man was stabbed and shot several times in southwest Detroit Wednesday morning.

Neighbors gathered outside southwest Detroit's Central Tower apartment complex after waking to gunshots.

Detroit police arrived to Central Street just after 1:30 a.m. finding 38-year-old Harry Ramos was standing outside when someone stabbed him and shot him.

An autopsy reveals Ramos had at least three bullets in his back. Sources say he was found lying in between a curb and a Toyota Camry with a pocket knife underneath him.  Seven shell casings were recovered.

"You just have a sad feeling in your heart," said Claude Ross of Central Tower Maintenance. "Just keep going."

"(It sounded) like an automatic," said resident Johnnie Warmack "A cannon."

According to the police report one witness says she heard the gunshots and saw a man running from the building, alerting apartment security and police.
