Santo Domingo.- The large number of pregnant teenagers seeking care at the Activo 20-30 Foundation’s Health Center is causing serious concern among the medical staff working there, according to hospital director Mario Moreno.
He said the situation is made even more serious by the fact that many of the pregnant minors are infected with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Every month some 400 pregnant teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are seen at the center, from the neighborhoods of La Ciénaga, Los Guandules, María Auxiliadora, 27 de Febrero and another 22 neighborhoods near the Foundation, whose premises are on Federico Velázquez street at the intersection with Albert Thomas street in Santo Domingo.
The center director blamed the high number of teenage pregnancies to family breakdown, irresponsible fathers and overcrowding that affects thousands of families in these areas of the capital.
The doctor was speaking on the occasion of a medical campaign organized by the foundation this week with the support of more than 25 medical laboratories. He said they have a check-up program in more than 25 neighborhoods.
