A mother in Mexico has been arrested on suspicion of gouging out the eyes of her 5-year-old son during a ceremony.
A mother in Mexico has been arrested on suspicion of gouging out the eyes of her 5-year-old son during a ceremony.
Police said on Thursday they had arrested seven people, including the boy's parents, after his eyeballs were pulled out during the ritual in Nezahualcoyotl, a working-class neighborhood on the eastern flank of Mexico City.
"There was some kind of ceremony inside a house," said Laura Uribe, a spokeswoman for state prosecutors in the State of Mexico, a populous region that borders much of the capital.
She did not give details of what the ritual involved.
The mother is believed to have removed the eyes with her bare hands because the boy refused to close them during the ceremony, police told a news conference.
Officers found the mutilated boy in the house on Thursday morning, before rushing him to a hospital in Mexico City for treatment.

Angry at her husband, Ron Smalls, over an alleged affair with a family member, Stacey Smalls, 41, has been charged with the murders of her 18-month-old twins Adam and Eve, reports NBC Philadelphia.
The mother is currently in the hospital being questioned by Philadelphia Police. She allegedly attempted a murder-suicide by drowning one baby and suffocating the other, poisoning her 4-year-old daughter by putting some kind of medicine in her drink, then slashing her own wrists. The child is listed in stable but guarded condition at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, reports the Associated Press.
Ron Smalls told WPVI-TV that the couple had been experiencing marital strife, but she refused to attend counseling:
“We’ve had some problems and I’d suggested therapy for both of us,” he said. “She didn’t think it was important.”
The children were discovered by their father when he arrived home at approximately 4:00 p.m. He called 911, telling the dispatcher that his wife had murdered his babies. Police quickly arrived on the scene and the babies were pronounced dead at approximately 4:10 p.m.Upon arrival, Stacey Smalls allegedly said, ” I harmed my babies.”
According to NBC10, Stacey Smalls left notes next to the children, one saying, “This is why I killed your kids.” The detailed notes were left for her husband, who is a correctional officer, explaining her anger upon finding out on Mother’s Day that he was allegedly having an affair with Stacey’s daughter from previous relationship.
“She had something that she felt was justification but there is no justification… it’s a tragedy two young babies dead and there is no excuse for that,” said Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.
Mrs. Smalls changed her Facebook status from “married” to “divorced” earlier this month and also put her marital issues out there for the world to see.
