For a variety of reasons,
Latinos are often considered a more culturally conservative group, regardless
of how they vote in elections. However, recent exit polls suggest that Latinos
— despite their “culturally conservative” reputations — are overwhelmingly in
favor of legalizing gay marriage.

The Huffington Post reports that “nearly six-in-ten
Latino voters (59%) said their state should legally recognize same-sex marriage
while 32% said their state should not…Non-Hispanic whites were the most opposed
to states legally sanctioning same-sex marriage (47% favored but 50% were
opposed).” While so-called “evangelical” Latinos are staunchly opposed to gay
marriage, the so-called “mainstream” Latinos are more culturally accepting.
The analysis amongst the
political pundits at The Huffington Post suggest that this new trend is yet
another signal to the GOP — who took a beating in the elections because they
failed to attract the so-called “Latino vote” — that they need to change their
hard-line stance against gay marriage if they wish to win back their Latino
base.
