Geronimo Aguilar, a Richmond Va pastor who stands accused of sexually
abusing two young girls in the late 1990s, was released from jail Thursday
after posting bail of $200,000.
Judge Louis Sturns from Tarrant County,Texas put a gag order on lawyers
and court officials dealing with Aguilar’s case.
After a bail reduction hearing was scheduled and then cancelled,
Aguilar was released.
Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, spokeswoman, Melody
McDonald, said that she was not allowed to discuss any details of the
conditions of Aguilar’s bail and could not say whether he would be allowed back
to Virginia.
Apparently, McDonald said in an email that “Mr. Aguilar’s bond
conditions can be obtained from the court or the Tarrant County District
Clerk’s Office.”
However, later that afternoon Aguilar’s paperwork was still being
prepared, according to the Clerk’s office. A little later, the clerk’s office
said that it was not allowed to release information on Aguilar’s bail
conditions because it had been ordered not to by the judge.
David Carlson, Aguilar’s lawyer in Virginia, also declined to answer
any questions about the bail conditions. His secretary said she was not allowed
to divulge any information by order of the judge.
Donnis Baggett, executive vice president of the Texas Press Association
said that refusal to release information about public court records and
referring to a gag order is a strange practice for a court officer.
“This seems extremely strange from a public records perspective. A gag
order usually applies to the principals, particularly the attorneys, discussing
the case,” Baggett said.
After being arrested by a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force last week,
Aguilar was charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child
under the age of 14 in two separate cases.
Aguilar is facing sentences of life imprisonment if he is found guilty
of the crimes which are first-degree felonies.
Aguilar was also charged with two counts of sexual assault of a child,
and faces a prison sentence up to 20 years for those second-degree felonies.
