Anthea Butler, an Ivy League college professor, has made headlines after the volatile Trayvon Martin verdict by saying that God was a White racist.
Many Christians in the Black community and even some non-believers are baffled by Butler’s statement.
Some are saying God was not a part of the jury that convicted Trayvon Martin and others are saying Zimmerman ended Martin’s life under his own free will, not a predetermined path laid out by the Lord.
Butler is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
She made numerous inflammatory statements about the role that God played in the trial as well as the events that led up to the trial. Some of her statement include: “God ain’t good all of the time” and “God is not for us.” She also says that the God she worships and serves is not the “American god.”
Surprisingly, Butler is a religious studies professor and the associate chair of the entire department at the University of Pennsylvania as well as a regular contributor to MSNBC and CNN.
Some speculate that Butler is only trying to drive a larger wedge into the divide amongst Americans throughout the Zimmerman trial. Josiah Ryan of “Campus Reform” feels that now is not the time for spewing hatred.
Religion is a large part of the lives of many people in the Black community. However, there has been a significant backlash from many that feel America is far beyond the days of simply praying for change. Several have taken to the Bible itself for justification, stating that prayer without works is dead.
