New York Knicks point guard Raymond Felton was arrested on three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, just hours after the team narrowly lost to the Dallas Mavericks.
As reported
by ESPN.com, the 29-year-old is expected to appear in a Manhattan court on Tuesday
after turning himself in for questioning at the 20th precinct on the
Upper West Side of the borough.
ESPN passed along details from a police spokesman:
Felton was charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a
firearm, which are felonies, and fourth-degree possession of a firearm,
which is a misdemeanor. Further details on the weapons charges are not known at this point.
Chris Herring of The Wall Street Journal later clarified that Felton wasn't charged with three counts:
According to Marc Berman of The New York Post, Felton is expected to be back at practice tomorrow:
Larry Celona, Natasha Velez and Jamie Schram of the New York Post alleged the arrest was made after Felton pointed his gun at his wife, Ariane Raymondo-Felton. According to the report, Raymondo-Felton recently filed for divorce after just 19 months of marriage.
Herring and Pervaiz Shallwani of The Wall Street Journal provided more details on the arrest:
According to a law-enforcement official, the arrest stems from a semiautomatic
handgun that allegedly belongs to Mr. Felton and was left at the apartment of his estranged wife, Ariane Felton.
>Ms. Felton and the attorney representing her in divorce proceedings took
the gun, which had 17 bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber, to the 20th precinct station house in Manhattan Monday evening because she no longer wanted it in the home, the official said.
>Ms. Felton, 26, said that on four occasions, most recently Feb. 14, Mr.
Felton waved the weapon around in an aggressive way but didn't point it
at her, according to the official.
>The official said the weapon and ammunition aren't legal in New York City.
Herring later added more details on actions the court took:
The nine-year NBA veteran—who was traded from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Knicks in 2012 and subsequently signed a three-year, $10 million
extension—has regressed after a successful 2012-13 campaign. He is
averaging just 10.4 points per game this season, down from his career
average of 13.3, and has seen his percentages dip across the board.
He scored just eight points in the 110-108 loss to the Mavs on Monday night, a close encounter that was decided by a Dirk Nowitzki buzzer-beater.
Felton recently made headlines after
revealing he is tired of jabs concerning his weight, per Newsday's Al Iannazzone: "I had one year when I was out of shape, now everybody wants to talk about my weight every year. It's kind of getting old. It's kind of getting on my nerves that that’s all you want to talk about."
As noted by ESPNNewYork.com's Ian Begley, unimpressive
play forced the Knicks to offer Felton in multiple trade deals before
the Feb. 20 NBA trade deadline. The team was unable to find a partner,
and now the floor general will need to focus on more serious matters
away from the court.
The Knicks can only hope Felton is able to resolve these off-court issues
and return in short order, particularly if Mike Woodson's team is to
recover from the mess that has become this season. New York currently
sits at 15 games under .500 (21-36) and six games out of a playoff spot
in the Eastern Conference, having lost three straight and nine of 11
overall.
Sirach 25:16
I had rather dwell with a lion and a dragon, than to keep house with a wicked woman.
Ecclesiastes 7:26
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as
bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
Ephesians 5:
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
