Mothers Fear For Their Children In Stand Your Ground States

Gathering at the state capitol in Tallahassee on Monday, residents of Florida gathered to denounce the state’s controversial Stand Your Ground law that has been the subject of two high-profile killings of black teens.
Among the speakers who spoke to the crowd were Rev. Al Sharpton, attorney Ben Crump and the parents of Trayvon Martin, who each called for the repeal of the state’s now-infamous statute, according to a report by The Grio.
Lucy McBath, the mother of Jordan Davis moved the crowd, according to The Grio, with a speech asking people to hold lawmakers accountable for the deaths of black men, which have increased since the Stand Your Ground law was implemented.
Davis was killed by Michael Dunn, when Dunn angrily fired ten shots into a vehicle with four black men, who Dunn confronted for playing music loudly at a convenience store. Three of the shots hit and killed Davis, then 17 years old, who was one of the four in the car. Dunn’s jury hung over a first-degree murder charge, but convicted him of second-degree murder and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
Another mother speaking at the rally told of a different problem with Stand Your Ground. Phyliss Giles, mother of former U.S. airman Michael Giles, said her son was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison when he unsuccessfully tried to use Stand Your Ground as a defense.
Giles was attacked and shot the man in the leg in self-defense. The attacker survived and testified in court he went after Giles without provocation, but Giles was still convicted and imprisoned. His mother broke into tears during her speech Monday over how unfairly the law is applied in the state.
The state’s most infamous defense case was that of George Zimmerman who was acquitted of first-degree murder for killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during an altercation initiated by Zimmerman.
