Mississippi House Bill allows guns in schools

School employees in Mississippi could soon be allowed to pack heat inside schools. A bill is now in committee in the Mississippi house that would allow superintendents the power to decide whether or not it would be allowed in their districts. There are some who says that if it passes, it would help protect kids in school.
"It is one more layer of deterrent for an armed bad guy walking into the school it's just another layer", said Dana Criswell of Mississippi Gun News.
Mississippi House bill 64 would allow for superintendents to appoint willing employees of a school district to carry a concealed weapon for security purposes on the campus of the school where they work.
"So no teacher is going to be forced to do it, nobody would want someone who doesn't carry a gun to be forced to carry a guy." Criswell said.
Some Mississippians don't think it's a good idea.
"It's just not safe because a kid can get ahold of it accidentally, a teacher could leave the room unsupervised and then it happens, you know somebody gets hurt." said a woman named Melissa from Southaven.
Some Mississippians say the state needs to look elsewhere for school security.
"It would be a good idea to put retired police officers in our schools to protect our children, they've been trained" said Carla of Southaven.
Supporters of the bill say that having schools as gun free zones is only making them an easier target and that arming selected employees is the way to go.
"You have some people within the school that have the ability to immediately stop someone that comes in and is intending to do harm." Criswell said.
A similar bill died in committee in the Mississippi Legislature last year. Interestingly enough, an attorney general's opinion last year in Monroe County found that Superintendents do have the power to either allow or not allow the carrying of firearms by concealed/ carry permit holders on their campuses.
