The gun violence touched all five of New York City boroughs. A 10-year-old Brooklyn boy was hospitalized after being hit by a bullet while walking through his neighborhood, according to the New York City Police Department.
Four people were killed, including a 24-year-old Bronx man who was shot early Sunday near his home, police said.
Overall crime in New York City remains low, though shootings have seen an uptick over the past several months, according to statistics.
In the week ending June 22, shooting incidents had risen 18 percent since the year before, the statistics show.
This was the third time in June that more than a dozen people in New York City were shot over a weekend, according to authorities.
New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has said the uptick is temporary and that the overall volume of shootings in New York is lower than last year. The murder rate is poised to reach a record low for 2014, he said.
"We've had an increase, a temporary increase, in shootings," Bratton said this month. "Crime goes up, it goes down."
He has also said there will be no increase in the number of stop and frisks performed by police officers.
The controversial policing tactic was widely used under his predecessor, Ray Kelly, but derided by a federal judge and by Mayor Bill de Blasio, who took office in January, as being carried out unfairly on mostly black and Latino men.
