Latia Harris, 25, of Salem allegedly violently and repeatedly hit a woman lying on the ground as bystanders did nothing … except record it on their phones. 

A brutal video was captured of an assault Tuesday night in Salem. Police said Latia Harris, 25, allegedly attacked a woman for spreading rumors about her. A crowd of bystanders watched, but the only one who tried to stop the attack was the victim's 2-year-old son.Someone is getting savagely beaten in front of her small child? Quick, grab your phone!

The dozen people who witnessed an attack a New Jersey police chief labeled "physically sickening to watch" did not try to stop Tuesday's assault in Salem or use their phones to call police. Instead, they stood by and make sure they recorded it.

"There is a moral and social breakdown in the fabric of our, society which is clearly evident when a woman gets pummeled in broad daylight in front of her child while a dozen people pull out their phones to record the incident instead of calling for help," Salem Chief of Police John J. Pelura III said in a statement. "There is so little regard for human life — by the actor and the bystanders."

The attack occurred in a park Tuesday night as a woman — identified by authorities as Latia Harris, 25, of Salem — is violently and repeatedly striking a woman lying on the ground.

The victim's 2-year-old son is standing nearby and, despite the adults present, is the only person trying to stop her. He makes several kicks at the attacker's direction, but it does not stop the assault on his mother. At one point of the video, two people walk around Harris in order to get a better view. Some spectators are also heard "oohing" as Harris kicks the defenseless woman lying on the ground.

Harris unleashes an expletive rant on her victim and it appears she is upset about something that happened at her job. Harris is wearing a McDonald's uniform and the attack occurred near the restaurant.

She also threatens the woman's child after he lands a few soft kicks.

"You better get your son before I kick him in the (expletive) face, too," she said.

After berating her, Harris then spits on her and storms off. Police said she asked the people in the audience not to post the video to social media.

Harris faces charges of aggravated assault and two counts of making terroristic threats and additional charges may be pending, police said. They discovered video of the incident on Facebook after they responded to the scene.

Harris has not returned to work since the incident and police have tried to locate her at two known addresses, but she has yet to be apprehended.

Police said the victim was found covered in blood, and was "disoriented, confused and bleeding from the face.” She said her attacker accused the 27-year-old of spreading rumors about her and her manager, police said. The victim was treated for her injuries at a local hospital. The attack left her with limited vision in her left eye, according to a complaint filed by police.
