Slavery in America came to an end only after a bloοdy civil war that almost tore this country apart. There are surely people in this country who aren’t aware of that fact, but we wouldn’t expect one of those people to be on a Colorado’s Board of Education.
Pam Mazanec, a Larkspur businesswoman who sits on Colorado’s Board of Education, expressed concern that Advanced Placement history test answers cast America in a negative light.
“As an example, I note our slavery history,” she wrote on Facebook, according to the Colorado Independent. “Yes, we practiced slavery. But we also ended it voluntarily, at great sacrifice, while the practice continues in many countries still today!”
“Shouldn’t our students be provided that viewpoint? This is part of the argument that America is exceptional. Does our APUSH (AP U.S. History) framework support or denigrate that position?”
One history teacher who spoke with the paper explained that Mazanec has a basic misunderstanding of U.S. history.
“The idea that the United States voluntarily gave up slavery is an outright misrepresentation of history. The United States engaged in a civil war to end slavery. There was nothing voluntary about it,” Stephanie Rossi, AP U.S. history teacher at Wheat Ridge High School, told the Independent. “I’m just flabbergasted at anyone who would make that claim. Flabbergasted.”
Pastor Patrick Demmer, also a civil rights activist, says Mazanec isn’t fit to serve on the board.
“What her comment and that whole movement is trying to basically do is repaint history in a way that takes away the ugliness and the hurt and abuse that the African American in America suffered and endured to get to where we are right now,” Demmer said.
Deuteronomy 28:
68 And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
John 8:
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Isaiah 42:
24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the Lord, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.
25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
